Girls Gone Wild in Patagonia!
This post title is just slightly tongue-in-cheek….if you’re expecting the typical “Girls Gone Wild” video, you’ll surely be disappointed! Though I did meet two of the craziest, wildest, most outgoing British girls EVER, this video is definitely PG-rated ; ). I originally met these wild & crazy gals in Uruguay at a horse farm, then we realized we were flying to Patagonia literally the same day. So we met up in El Calafate, gateway to the uber-poplar Perito Moreno Glacier ~ a Patagonia highlight. Here is our (cheeky) fun footage from Perito Moreno….aka “Girls Gone Wild in Patagonia!”

What You Need in Patagonia
At Perito Moreno Glacier, we wore layers & shed them progressively as the day got warmer. One thing you ALWAYS need in Patagonia: a warm JACKET!! Two other Patagonia necessities: sunscreen & walking sticks. You don’t need walking sticks at Perito Moreno, but you will on nearly every other major trail. And though you may not think so, the sun is exceptionally strong in Patagonia. A small, chapstick-size sunscreen worked well for me, as I could easily be re-applied throughout the day.
Where I Stayed in El Calafate
El Calafate is the closest major city to Perito Moreno Glacier, as well as a TON of other outdoor adventures. My biggest piece of advice about visiting Perito Moreno Glacier is to STAY in El Calafate!!! DON’T take a tour from Chile ~ it will take ALL DAY, & you’ll need to cross the Argentinian/Chilean border TWICE!!! Terrible idea.
Instead, stay in El Calafate, which is a cute little frontier town. I stayed at America del Sur Hostel El Calafate, in a dorm for four people, at the bargain price of $22/night!!! And when I saw the view at the hostel, I just about died. America del Sur always felt warm & cozy after a day of (freezing) adventuring; their Wi-Fi was among the best I found anywhere in Patagonia, breakfast was above average, & they offer amazing steak dinners.
This place is a serious FIND!!

Great video! I’ll be doing some solo female travel in Patagonia, & this video makes it seem a lot more relaxed & fun than my relatives are leading me to believe! In general, did you find Patagonia to be a pretty safe region? And, did you ever do any of the major hikes alone? Thanks, Debbie
Hi Debbie! I totally understand relatives being worried about you traveling solo as a girl ~ but I found Patagonia to be one of the safest, most mellow places I’ve been to (& if any of your relatives have been there, I’m sure they’d agree with me)! Almost EVeryone is there to hike/be out in nature, & that crowd tends to be adventurous & helpful. Plus, there are no major cities, which is where much of a country’s crime tends to be concentrated. The only major hike I did alone was Fitz Roy (though I did get dropped off with a larger group); there were so many people on the trail, especially at the end, that there were only a few instances where I was truly “alone” ~ & that only lasted a few minutes (I visited during February). But frankly, I did cherish those precious few “alone” times, in that absolutely MAGnificent setting! Hope that helps ~ you will LOVE Patagonia!! xoxo Noelia
