Where Was Murder Mystery Filmed?

I’ve always been a sucker for murder mysteries ~ & even though the new Netflix flick “Murder Mystery” is more comedy than mystery, it had me at hellooo with all its gorgeous European filming locations.  And I wanted to know: “Where Was Murder Mystery Filmed in Europe?”  Netflix must have a lot riding on this movie, because I’m currently in Mexico City writing this, & I’ve seen ads for it ALL over the city!  And though it appears that much of the movie was shot in France, the majority was actually filmed in Italy.  We’ll get into specific locations below…

And Where Was Murder Mystery 2 Filmed?

**Author’s Note in 2023: When I originally wrote this article, there was just one Jennifer Aniston + Adam Sandler “Murder Mystery.” However, as of March 2023, there’s now a second one.  While I didn’t enjoy it as much as the first: there are a few locations worth mentioning.  For instance, the Maharajah’s wedding was filmed in Hawaii at Kualoa Ranch ~ which is a 4,000 acre nature reserve located on the island of Oahu.

Unfortunately, there are no hotels at Kualoa Ranch.  But one of the closest hotels you can stay at is stunning Turtle Bay Resort ($599+/night).  Set on 850-acres overlooking a beautiful Hawaiian cove, you may never need to leave this resort.  There are seven restaurants, a spa, two outdoor pools, multiple hot tubs, & two golf courses.  You can bet Adam Sandler snuck away from filming at some point to play these links….

Where Was Murder Mystery Filmed?

When Jennifer Aniston & Adam Sandler first board the yacht, there’s a gorgeous town shown behind them.  At first glance, I thought they were filming in Monaco.  But I was wrong.  It’s actually a small town on the Italian Riviera called Santa Margherita Ligure, near Portofino.  You can find Santa Margherita Ligure on the map above; it’s about an hour south of Genoa, & an hour north of famous Cinque Terre.

If you want to visit Santa Margherita Ligure, stay at perfectly-situated Imperial Palace Hotel.

Where Was Murder Mystery Filmed?

Next up, the “Murder Mystery” gang moved on to Monaco for the Grand Prix, & again, I assumed they filmed at the glamorous Hotel Fairmont in Monaco (which I visited many years ago, & recall as being the height of luxury).  Apparently though, they didn’t actually film here ~ instead, they filmed in Milan at the Hotel Principe di Savoia…a favorite of George Clooney’s, along with many other A-listers.

Where Was Murder Mystery Filmed at Lake Como?

Finally, we come to the last significant filming location in “Murder Mystery,” & another George Clooney haunt: Lake Como.  Here, they filmed at 19th-century manor, Villa Erba ~ which is not available to stay in as a hotel, though you can rent it out for a private event.  If you want to stay in a luxurious villa at Lake Como, two great options are famous Villa Lario ($550+/night), with suites overlooking the lake.  Or there’s charming boutique hotel, Villa Vittoria ($205+/night).

The final scenes of “Murder Mystery” were filmed at Villa Erba at Lake Como, which is only available for private events (not as a hotel).
