Where to Stay in Vienna’s Innere Stadt

When my friend Tasha & I first visited the city of Vienna, we had NO clue where to stay!  So we randomly picked a hotel in the 15th district.  What we didn’t realize: the absolute BEST place to stay in Vienna is actually the 1st district, which is called Innere Stadt.  Since that was always where we wanted to be, we kept having to taxi, walk, or run there: to sight-see, shop, & to visit Vienna’s famous opera.  If you’re a first or second-time visitor to the city: stay in the 1st district!  It will save you time & money.  So let’s find out: where to stay in Vienna’s Innere Stadt?

 

Overview of Vienna Hotels

• Steigenberger Hotel Herrenhof ($$) = Grand Spa Hotel Located by the Hofburg Palace:  Just a 3-minute walk to the Hofburg Palace & a 10-minute walk to the Vienna Opera House: this is a great place to stay if you want to be right in the heart of the city.  Rooms are airy, spacious, & modern ~ & there’s a great breakfast buffet.  Their spa is a stand-out.  Check prices here.
• The Leo Grand ($$$) = Chic 5-Star Hotel Next to St. Stephen’s Cathedral:  This hotel has the best location in town: guests rate it a 9.9 out of 10!  You’re steps from St. Stephen’s Cathedral & Stephansplatz Square (with great shopping & restaurants), & the hotel breakfast is excellent.  This is a calm, beautiful oasis in the heart of the city…walkable to all major sights!  This is where I would stay.  Check prices here. 
• Hotel Austria ($$) = One of the Top 3-Star Hotels in Vienna’s City Center.  If you’re on a budget (i.e. rooms under $200/night) but still want to stay in the city center: Hotel Austria is a solid choice ~ with a retro feel.  A breakfast buffet is available, plus room service, a bar, library, & even bike rentals!  With rooms on the smaller side, this is a better choice for solo travelers or couples who plan to do lots of walking.  Check prices here.
• Hotel Imperial, a Luxury Collection Hotel ($$$) = Historic Luxury Hotel with Butler Service:  Set in a building dating back to the 1800’s, Hotel Imperial is the place to stay if you’re looking for that quintessential, old-world Vienna charm.  Chandeliers & marble bathrooms await in their opulent suites, as does their posh piano bar.  Or enjoy a champagne brunch at their cafe!
