Where to Stay in Vienna’s Innere Stadt
When my friend Tasha & I first visited the city of Vienna, we had NO clue where to stay! So we randomly picked a hotel, that happened to be in the 15th district. What we didn’t realize: the absolute BEST place to stay in Vienna is actually in the 1st district, which is called Innere Stadt. Since that was always where we wanted to be, we kept having to either taxi, walk, or run there: to sight-see, shop, for nightlife, & to visit Vienna’s famous opera. To save yourself time & money, let’s find out: where to stay in Vienna’s Innere Stadt/City Center?

Staying in Vienna’s Innere Stadt puts you in walking distance to the city’s most gorgeous sights…
What Famous Sights are in the Innere Stadt/Ist District? St. Stephen’s Cathedral, the amazing Hofburg Palace (where we happily spent an afternoon), famous Stephansplatz Square, the stunning Austrian National Library, the Ringstrasse, & the Vienna State Opera.
There’s sooo much gorgeous architecture + statues here, as well as great coffee shops & nightlife: you’ll never be bored in the 1st district!

All dressed up for a night at the Vienna Opera…

Overview of Vienna Hotels

For a grand hotel in a perfect location: check out the Steigenberger.
- Steigenberger Hotel Herrenhof ($$) = Grand Spa Hotel Located by the Hofburg Palace: Just a 3-minute walk to the Hofburg Palace & a 10-minute walk to the Vienna Opera House: this is a great place to stay if you want to be right in the heart of the city. Rooms are airy, spacious, & modern ~ & there’s a great breakfast buffet. Their spa is a stand-out.
- The Leo Grand ($$$) = Chic 5-Star Hotel Next to St. Stephen’s Cathedral: The Leo Grand may just have the best location in town: guests rate it a 9.9 out of 10! You’re steps from St. Stephen’s Cathedral & popular Stephansplatz Square (with great shopping & restaurants), & the hotel’s breakfast is excellent. This is a calm, beautiful oasis in the heart of the city…with an amazing staff & walkable to all major sights! This is where I would stay. Check prices here.
- Hotel Austria ($$) = One of the Top 3-Star Hotels in Vienna’s City Center. If you’re on a budget (i.e. rooms around $130/night) but still want to stay in the city center: Hotel Austria is a solid choice ~ with a bit of a retro feel. A breakfast buffet is available, plus room service, a bar, library, & even bike rentals! With rooms slightly on the smaller side, this is a better choice for solo travelers or couples who plan to do lots of walking.
- Hotel Imperial, a Luxury Collection Hotel ($$$) = Historic Luxury Hotel with Butler Service & Opulent Suites: Set in a building dating back to the 1800’s, Hotel Imperial is the place to stay if you’re looking for that quintessential, old-world Vienna charm. Chandeliers & marble bathrooms await, as does their posh piano bar….or a champagne brunch at their more casual cafe.

I’m quite surprised there are actually some afforable options in Vienna’s most popular district, the Innere Stadt. This article is a great help, I’m planning my wife & my 50th anniversary surprise trip.
Hi Alfred, that’s absolutely fantastic! Congratulations on celebrating your 50th ~ that’s quite an achievement!! Vienna is a VERY romantic place, & I think that is an excellent choice for such a trip : )
So as a first-time visitor to Vienna, you would definitely try to stay in the Innere Stadt/1st District?
Absolutely, Duane! Otherwise, you’ll probably spend a lot of time transferring between your hotel & the 1st District.
