Where to Stay in San Miguel de Allende!
When I visit a city for the first time, I make a point to visit every hotel that I planned to stay at ~ so that I’ll know if my hotel is the best, or if there’s an even better place to stay. And San Miguel de Allende was no exception. This city simply invites strolling, & many of the city’s top sights (& hotels) are within easy walking distance of each other. So, from the most high-end luxury hotels…like the Belmond & Rosewood, to reasonably-priced places like where I stayed, at Casaluna Boutique Hotel: we’ll discover “Where to Stay in San Miguel de Allende.”
Something to Know About San Miguel de Allende: While Mexico is often known for cheap hotels, San Miguel is NOT where you’ll find them. Yes, you can still get a lovely room for around $100/night (like where I stayed) ~ but most hotel prices here rival those in the States. The value you get here though is exceptional.

Overview of Hotels in San Miguel de Allende
- Casa de Sierra Nevada, A Belmond Hotel ($612+) = Intimate LUXURY Hotel Located a Few Blocks Up from Main Church. This is one of San Miguel’s true luxury properties. And the interesting thing about this hotel: it sprawls across several city blocks, with different dining venues (including a *hidden* rooftop speakeasy) in each building. This creates a very intimate feel. When I visited, hotel guests were mainly couples. Expect antique, elegant furnishings + all modern amenities, multiple restaurants, outdoor pools, & one of the friendliest staffs in town.
- Rosewood San Miguel de Allende ($585+/night) = Incredible Luxury Hotel a Few Blocks Downhill from La Parroquia. The Rosewood is the ultimate luxury property in town. If you want Butler service: you’ll find it here. Airport transfers? No problem. And their grounds are so lovely & flower-filled (see photos below), they will instantly set you at ease. Rooms here are just as lovely as the Belmond ~ if a little more modern. And in terms of restaurants: you’ve got a gorgeous rooftop bar, wine cellar, fantastic main restaurant, & a more casual poolside eatery. This hotel is for the most discerning travelers to San Miguel…it just requires about a 10-minute walk uphill to reach La Parroquia.
- Casaluna Boutique Hotel ($116+) = Beautiful Courtyard Hotel with Perfect Location by La Parroquia. This is where I stayed, as a solo female traveler: & loved it. The hotel is set back from the street, & you must enter through a locked gate (staff buzzes you in) ~ which made me feel perfectly safe. There’s no restaurant here, but because of the hotel’s central location: you’re just steps from amazing coffee shops & glorious rooftop bars. My room was huge, with a large king bed, lovely tiled floor, & large bathroom with soaking tub. If you want on-site amenities, this isn’t the spot for you. But if you want to easily walk to all of San Miguel’s main sights without spending a fortune: it’s ideal.
- Casa 1810 Parque Hotel Boutique ($239+) = Spacious Rooms + Amazing Staff with a Gorgeous Rooftop Bar. Another mid-range hotel with hip furnishings + rustic, Mexican art = a great combination. Their trendy rooftop bar sets them apart, as you can simply walk upstairs for good food & entertainment. Guests comment on the spacious rooms, some with brick walls ~ & both their lobby & rooftop bars are sophisticated & chic.
- Live Aqua Urban Resort ($374+) = Super-Chic Minimalist Retreat in the Hills of San Miguel. One of the newest hotels in San Miguel, this is a magical bohemian-wellness retreat, set in the hills above La Parroquia. Sure, it’s a little pricey: but this hotel competes with wellness retreats in the States. Amenities include Smart TV’s & beautiful wood beams; room service is available, as are a high-end restaurant, bar, & terrace. An outdoor pool, spa, sauna, & hot tub with a sundeck round out the offerings at this hip yet peaceful retreat.
“FIVE STARS. FIVE STARS. FIVE STARS. I LOVE the Live Aqua! Rooms are gorgeous. The pool area & spa are phenomenal. Love how quiet it is as well as the neighborhood, Obraje. A very short walk to La Parroquia & El Jardin. Pricing for F&B is a bit high at the hotel ($50 USD for a continental breakfast + coffee), but you can easily find non-gringo pricing within a short walk of the hotel.”

“The Belmond is a gorgeous hotel, best room, great food, & staff was incredible. Could not recommend this place enough & am so excited to return! Made such an effort to make our stay incredible, & I want to tell everyone to visit this hotel. Gave us a few surprises for our anniversary…& I could stay by the pool for days at a time!”

“Just returned from a week at the Rosewood San Miguel. I highly recommend the Private Residence program. Our Butlers, Monserrat & Mariana were world-class. The Residences are well thought-out as cars/taxis can drive under to your private garage. We played Ventanas three days, good course. Dinners were Fatima, Atrio, Casa Notre, The Restaurant & Salvajes. Unsure if any other city could provide 5 dinners at that level. Also, Amex Platinum gives free breakfast for your group.”

“What a gorgeous surprise of a hotel. We LOVED our room with vaulted brick ceilings & charming courtyard view. Casaluna’s location is awesome, walking distance to main square. And did I mention the bed & pillows were amazing? Best pillows we slept on in Mexico! Great value. Great ambiance. Book it! Oh…& if you want the best massage of your life, have the front desk book you an in-room massage. We were so impressed we booked another before our departure!”

“Fantastic location & wonderful service! Casa 1810 is a little gem in San Miguel de Allende. From check-in to the valet, to food service staff ~ we were treated so well! Our room was spacious with a fabulous double shower & easy Netflix connection. The hotel is contemporary within a century-old facade.
Our breakfasts were delicious, but our favourite meal was a lunch of Tradito de Atún (tuna sashimi) & Ribeye Tacos, which were the best we’ve ever devoured! Would most definitely recommend this hotel to anyone visiting!

Our family stays at the Rosewood every time we visit San Miguel de Allende: it’s truly our home away from home (we live in Mexico City). The views, attention to detail, and beauty of the rooms draw us back time and again. Yes, it’s expensive – but not only do we feel absolutely safe here, the staff remembers us and welcomes us back each time.
Thanks so much for your insight & feedback, Rosario! It truly is one of the best hotels in Mexico, & I’m so happy that you & your family are able to enjoy it : ) xoxo Noelia
I’m a solo traveler visiting San Miguel soon, and I’m really interested in a hotel where I can easily walk to all major sights. Sadly, I can’t afford either the Belmond or Rosewood. Casaluna looks like a good option though? How far are good restaurants, etc.
Hi Jacqueline! I think you will LOVE San Miguel de Allende. It’s a magical place. In terms of walking, I think Casaluna Boutique is among the very BEST options ~ & in fact, even better than the Rosewood, which requires walking up & downhill to reach the main church. My favorite breakfast spot was a 1-minute walk from Casaluna, & the church takes about 5 minutes. Their location is truly amazing, & I think excellent for solo travelers. Hope that helps! xoxo Noelia
