Where to Stay in Puerto Natales, Chile
If you’re researching a trip to Patagonia: chances are, the charming city of Puerto Natales is on your radar. It’s the closest major city to Torres del Paine National Park ~ one of Patagonia’s highlights. The hike to the Towers of Torres del Paine (pictured below) is the #1 favorite hike of my life….because the pay-off at the end of the hike is SO huge. Unless you’re staying in the park, it’s more affordable to stay in Puerto Natales, & then bus or drive into the park. So let’s find out where to stay in Puerto Natales…

THIS is the pay-off at the end of the hike to Torres del Paine’s famous “towers.”
Getting Oriented in Patagonia
Patagonia is a HUGE area. It’s really an entire region, spread out over two countries ~ Chile & Argentina, at their southern-most tips. All three cities below are great places to stay, as they’re close to many Patagonia adventures.
- 1) Puerto Natales, Chile = Closest major city to Torres del Paine National Park (about 90-minutes from park);
- 2) El Calafate, Argentina = Close to Perito Moreno Glacier;
- 3) El Chalten, Argentina = At the base of several hikes, including Mount Fitz Roy.

Overview of Puerto Natales Hotels
When I stayed in Puerto Natales, I was there for 10 days: & stayed in five different places! I really wanted to get a feel for the place…& found the town very charming.

From any of these hotels, you can walk down to the waterfront for incredible views & a nice walking path.
- Hostel Last Hope ($) = Great Place to Meet Hiking Buddies! When I first arrived in Puerto Natales: I trudged downhill from the bus station to this friendly hostel. The owner Diego is young & helpful, able to make all kinds of hiking arrangements. I stayed in a bunk room with 3 girls, & ended up hiking Torres del Paine with my new Irish friend, Siobhan.
This is a great place to save money & meet people in Puerto Natales!
- Yagan House Hostel ($) = Cozy Hostel with Breakfast Included! This centrally-located hostel offers a delicious early breakfast, hot water, comfy beds, a kitchen you can use, & gear for rent. A cozy shared living area & friendly owners make this one of the most popular hostels in Puerto Natales ~ with a quieter vibe than others.
- Sheuen Patagonia ($$) = Modern Hotel with a Fantastic Rooftop! They serve delicious free breakfasts here, & their rooftop has AMAZING views of town & the water. There’s free Wi-Fi, flatscreen TV’s, lounge, & lovely sitting area in their back garden. A slightly longer walk to town: but a safe, quiet location. Check prices at Sheuen here.
- Keoken Patagonia B&B ($$) = Small, Family-Run B&B with Amazing Hosts: Located on a quiet street that’s walkable to town, Mr. Rodrigo welcomes you here with plenty of hospitality! This was the last place I stayed, & my favorite. Rooms are spacious & comfy, with great beds & beautiful shared living areas. Rodrigo can arrange tours for you, & will likely chat over a delicious breakfast. Felt like staying in someone’s home!
- Vinnhaus Hotel ($$$) = Elegant Boutique Hotel with Attached Coffee & Wine Bar: This was the second place I stayed, & back then: it used to be a hostel. Now, it’s an elegant 8-room hotel that’s family-run, offering luggage storage, comfy beds, high-end design, & killer coffee in the morning…plus yummy breakfasts!
If you like a boutique spot right in the heart of town: stay here.
- Hotel Costaustralis ($$$) = High-End Hotel with a Gorgeous Waterfront Location: For a more lux hotel that’s still close to town: check out Hotel Costaustralis. Their waterfront location is hard to beat ~ yet you can still walk to shops & restaurants easily. A great spot for couples looking for more privacy, great views, & comfortable surroundings.
Check prices here.

“Vinnhaus is a beautifully curated property in the heart of town with terrific rooms. Restaurant is stylish. Breakfast as good as anywhere ~ with freshly cooked pastries, excellent coffee & home-made granola. Personal service with owners is a joy; we can’t recommend highly enough!”

How many days would you plan to stay in Puerto Natales if you want to do several hikes in Torres del Paine? Vinnhaus looks so cute, btw!
Hi Brandy, thanks for your question! So if you want to do 2-3 hikes in Torres del Paine (which is about a 90-minute drive from Puerto Natales), I’d plan to spend AT LEAST one week in Puerto Natales. And 1-2 of those nights, you may want to stay in the park itself ~ to avoid having to drive so far each time. More expensive, but will be worth it in the long run. Some of these hikes are quite challenging: so you’ll also want to build in some time for R&R/possibly some massages & relaxtion! Not to mention a little time to stroll & enjoy the town of Puerto Natales, which is very charming.
And yes, Vinnhaus is one of the most charming hotels with the BEST location! Right in the heart of town : ) Enjoy your trip!! xoxo Noelia
My girlfriend and I are planning a trip to Patagonia and find your article. Very helpful. It’s nice to know that you can travel on somewhat of a budget in Patagonia. We’re both pretty fit, and had assumed we could hike to the Torres on our own. But a friend said we needed a guide. What are your thoughts?
Hi Alex, thanks for your question. So if you’re both pretty fit: I’d say you can definitely hike to the Torres (one of Patagonia’s most famous hikes) on your own. There are so many people on the trail, you’ll never feel that alone ~ & you can always ask people for help or directions if you feel lost. But it’s a very straightforward hike! Something you MUST do if visiting Puerto Natales/Torres del Paine. Hope that helps!
