Where to Stay in Hvar Town, Croatia!

Croatia is quite possibly my favorite European country: it’s hard to beat!  From delicious turquoise waters, to thousands of islands off its shoreline, & houses with pretty orange rooftops ~ this is a country that just begs to be explored!  But where did I have the most fun in Croatia?  Hands-down, on Hvar Island.  My friends & I loved this island so much ~ we cried when we left!  You could stay on other parts of Hvar Island, but for my money: it’s the most fun to stay right in Hvar Town…the “heart” of the island.  Here I’ll give you a quick run-down of where to stay in Hvar Town, Croatia!

Should You Stay in Hvar Town?

Is Hvar Town the Best Place to Stay on Hvar Island?

Short answer: Yes.

Hvar Town is Perfect for:

✅  First-time visitors

✅  Restaurants

✅  Nightlife

✅  Boat tours/visiting nearby islands

✅  Walkability

✅  Couples

✅  Single travlers looking for nightlife

Not ideal for:

❌  Complete seclusion

❌  Rural Croatian village atmosphere

I’ve also stayed with friends by Stari Grad, which is about 15-20 minutes from Hvar Town.  While it was absolutely beautiful: my friends & I wanted to island-hop, shop, & go to the bars at night ~ but this involved a long car ride both ways.

NOT IDEAL.

Once we moved over to Hvar Town, we had a LOT more fun, & were able to walk everywhere we wanted to go!

The Palace Elisabeth Hvar was the first five-star hotel ever built on the island! It’s located right on the main port.

The town’s famous clock tower is set within the Palace Elisabeth Hotel.

My friends & I walked past the Palace Elisabeth Hotel EVERY day during our time in Hvar!  It’s a major landmark in town, surrounded by bars & restaurants ~ & just a 2-minute walk to the port.

FAQ about Hvar Town:

  • Q: Is Hvar Town worth staying in?  A: Absolutely!  Staying in Hvar will probably be one of the highlights of your Croatia trip.
  • Q: How many nights should I stay?  A:  At least 3-5 nights. We stayed in Hvar longer than in Dubrovnik or Split, & that was 100% the right decision!!
  • Q: Is Hvar Town expensive?  A: It doesn’t have to be. If you stay just about a 10 or 15-minute walk from the harbor, it will significantly reduce the price of your accommodations. My friend Tasha & I stayed a 10-minute walk from the harbor, & we loved walking along the waterfront every day ~ it became part of our daily routine.
  • Q: Do I need a car?  A: I don’t think so.  Not unless you want to explore several other parts of the island. I’d recommend instead visiting the nearby Pakleni Islands, which are absolutely HEAVENLY.

All you have to do to get there is grab a boat at Hvar’s main port!

My friend Tasha & I at our favorite spot: Hula Hula Beach Bar, which is close to Amfora Grand AND Hotel Podstine!

Sunset views from Hula Hula Beach Bar are incredible….we came back many times during our stay!!

Goodbye…Hvar Town!

Where I’d Stay if I Returned to Hvar Tomorrow:

If I were heading back to Hvar, I’d stay at the Amfora Grand for a girl’s trip ~ to try out their pools & beach area!  If I was traveling for romance, I’d stay at the more intimate Hotel Podstine.  This is one of the prettiest parts of town, with great sunset views ~ but also walkable to the main harbor, restaurants: basically, a great balance of luxury & value

And both of these hotels are more affordable than the hotels right in town!
