Where to Find Great Weather in Mexico Year-Round
Whether you’re an ex-pat looking for somewhere to settle in Mexico, or a snowbird who’s looking for some warmth during winter: this article will spell out where to find GREAT weather in Mexico year-round. Mexico has several cities that are pleasant all year long, as they sit at a higher elevation ~ which prevents them from getting too hot. Cities like this include Mexico City (7,349 feet), Puebla (7,005 feet), & Oaxaca (5,100 feet): which all average temperatures in the 70’s year-round. Any of these would provide a great year-round base, or read on to find Mexico’s best weather, month-by-month….

Mexico Cities with Great Year-Round Weather:
- Guadalajara (5,138 feet): Temperatures average around 75 degrees year-round. This is a gorgeous city with lots of character, great restaurants, & top doctors (in case you’re traveling for medical tourism)! Search for hotels in Guadalajara here.
- Mexico City (7,349 feet): Daily highs in Mexico’s capital range from 72 to 81 degrees; nights can drop to the 40’s. You’ll never stop exploring this massive city…but great neighborhoods for first-timers to stay in include Roma Norte, Polanco, & Condesa.
- Oaxaca (5,100 feet): Temperatures between 75 to 82 degrees year-round (heavenly)!! I love Oaxaca: you’re an easy flight from Mexico City, or the beaches of the Yucatan. Search hotels in Oaxaca City here.
Best Weather in Mexico from January-April
January to April is known as Mexico’s “Dry Season.” Which means: you have a TON of great options in terms of weather. As most of the U.S. is dealing with cool temps during this time ~ I’m primarily looking for great beach vacations.

A great, inexpensive January getaway is to Mazatlan ~ where many beachfront rooms run less than $100/night.
- January: Mazatlan (79 degrees & 0 days of rain) & Acapulco (86 degrees & 0 days of rain) are two spots with near-perfect January weather. Mazatlan is a little cooler, with an average of 79 degrees in January ~ vs. Acapulco’s 86 degrees. Both cities have a more authentic Mexican vibe than say, Cancun: you’ve got great food, great beaches, colorful buildings, & plenty of sunshine. Search for hotels on the beach in Mazatlan here (you can get deals for as low as $62/night in Mazatlan), or check out oceanfront hotels in Acapulco.
If you’re concerned about safety in Mazatlan: read this article, where I break down safety stats. Bottom line: I’ve been twice, & felt totally safe both times!
- February: Playa del Carmen (82 degrees & 5 days of rain) or Cozumel (86 degrees & 4 days of rain) are great places to be in February. Snorkelers & divers will love the underwater-paradise that surrounds Cozumel, & staying at the Cozumel Palace puts you right on the water, by all the best spots. Meanwhile, nightlife-lovers will enjoy staying at one of the many beachfront hotels in Playa del Carmen. Hotel Xcaret is perfect for families looking for water parks galore, while couples will love Grand Velas Riviera Maya (which was featured on “Love is Blind“).
- March: Chiapas (82 degrees & 3 days of rain) or Tulum (87 degrees & 2 days of rain). Chiapas sits in the highlands of Southern Mexico, & is slightly off-the-beaten path for most Americans. The gorgeous city of San Cristobal de las Casas is a great place to base in this region. For a more bohemian-beach retreat: Tulum is super popular ~ with good reason. Stay at a hotel on their sand-washed beachfront, & bike to nearby restaurants & bars. Azulik Tulum is famous for their chic decor & bird-like “nests,” which offer incredible views of Tulum’s beach & jungle.
- April: San Miguel de Allende (84 degrees & 1 day of rain). The beaches start to get hot & humid in April: so we’ve got to head up to the highlands for cooler temps! San Miguel de Allende sits at 6,200 feet, & is famous for its cathedral + stunning jacaranda trees ~ which hit their primetime in April. I fell in love with San Miguel de Allende when I visited: it’s a major walking town, with stunning views in all directions, gorgeous churches, incredible rooftop bars, & beautiful hotels, like the Rosewood San Miguel. There’s a reason its been voted one of the top cities in the world….many times.

Enjoying an Aperol Spritz in San Miguel de Allende, with jacaranda trees & the famous cathedral in the background…
Best Weather in Mexico from May-August
This time of year gets a little trickier to find great weather, as it’s considered the “Rainy Season” in most places. But I’ve found some gems below….

Did you know that Cabo gets NO RAIN in June? Unlike almost everywhere else in Mexico. Photo of the One & Only Palmilla.
- May: Mexico City (82 degrees & 8 days of rain). May is a great time to visit the nation’s capital: though you may get some rain, it shouldn’t last long. And hotel prices go down in May. This is another city I love: the food is SO GOOD!! I walked about 10 miles a day: there’s so much to see, & I felt very safe (even as a solo traveler). My favorite neighborhoods are Roma Norte, Condesa, & Polanco ~ I’ve written about safe places to stay in each. The Wild Oscar is a great place to stay in Polanco (by lots of amazing restaurants), or the Andaz in Condesa is a great place to stay if you’re looking for nightlife & a great rooftop bar.
I’ve written a lot on Mexico City: read about great brunch spots, where to stay in Roma Norte, or about how safe solo travel is in Mexico City.
- June: Cabo San Lucas (89 degrees & 0 days of rain). Cabo is one of the only places in Mexico that has virtually NO rain in June! Storms hit here later in the year. So it will be warm: but as long as you’re by the ocean or a pool ~ you’ll be good. The One & Only Palmilla is a beachfront stand-out in Cabo….& Jennifer Aniston is a fan. Prices go down during the summer, so you should be able to get a great deal this time of year.
- July: Isla Holbox (89 degrees & 5 days of rain) or Queretaro (81 degrees & 10 days of rain). The reason to visit Isla Holbox in July is: WHALE SHARKS!! This is prime-time to see them, as they migrate here to feed. Punta Caliza Hotel is a great place to stay in Holbox ~ they can hook you up with tours. For cooler weather: head to Queretaro. Located by San Miguel de Allende, this is a beautiful city known for its gorgeous historic center (where I highly recommend staying)! Hotel La Casa de Marquesa has a great location & stunning decor, & is walkable to many great restaurants.
- August: Oaxaca (83 degrees & 10 days of rain). You can’t really escape rain in Mexico in August. Most Mexican beaches are hot & humid, or in prime hurricane season. So I recommend heading to Oaxaca City, which sits at a pleasant 5,100 feet. Short bursts of rain bring out the green of the city’s surrounding hills. And Oaxaca’s downtown is one of the most charming in all of Mexico. I explored the nearby Monte Alban ruins & one of my FAVORITE spots of all time: Hierve del Agua, a petrified waterfall that sits on the edge of a cliff. It’s a MUST-VISIT!! I stayed at NaNa Vida Hotel, & loved its charm & great location (walkable to everything).

A colorful festival captured in the heart of Oaxaca: one of Mexico’s most charming regions.

Best Weather in Mexico from September-December
The rainy season is winding down during the fall, with November kicking off near-perfect weather at Mexican beaches todos….everywhere.

Sometimes the brief storms in Guadalajara add to the beauty ~ as in this photo of the Guadalajara Cathedral. (View from NH Hotel Guadalajara).
- September: Guadalajara (80 degrees & 10 days of rain). September certainly isn’t the only time to visit Guadalajara: this is a city with great weather year-round. It’s also a city where MANY travel for medical tourism: as Mexico’s second-largest city, your choice of great doctors here is near-endless. Llaquepaque is my favorite neighborhood ~ it’s colorful & filled with art, great restaurtants, & stunning boutique hotels. But I also loved staying right downtown, by the city’s famous yellow cathedrals, at NH Hotel Guadalajara. For a great day trip, head out to Lake Chapala: another place with one of the best year-round climates in Mexico.
- October: Cabo San Lucas (90 degrees & 1 day of rain) or San Miguel de Allende (76 degrees & 3 days of rain). Both are previously on the list ~ & both are great places to visit in October.
- November: The Sea of Cortez/La Paz (86 degrees & 0 days of rain), Mexico City, or Oaxaca (81 degrees & 0 days of rain). In November, whale sharks are starting their migration through the Sea of Cortez: & La Paz is one of the best places to see them. Hotel Indigo La Paz is a beautiful resort that can arrange tours to nearby Isla Espiritu Santo ~ home of sea lions. But if you want to celebrate Day of the Dead in Mexico: there’s no better place to visit in November than Mexico City or Oaxaca, where festivities are at their height.
- December: Cancun (83 degrees & 6 days of rain) or Puerto Vallarta (82 degrees & 1 day of rain). If you want to spend Christmas in warmer climes: it’s hard to beat Cancun or Puerto Vallarta. Weather is pretty much perfect, & the whole family can enjoy time in the water. Moon Palace Cancun is a stunning all-inclusive that’s family-friendly ~ & not crazy expensive. In Puerto Vallarta, Dreams Vallarta Bay Resort & Spa offers beach access, gorgeous pools, kid’s activities, & a relaxing spa for Mom & Dad to enjoy…

For Christmas in the tropics: check out the Moon Palace Cancun. Photo: Booking.com.
