Dr. Tony Youn’s Favorite Non-Invasive Skin Treatment
Dr. Anthony Youn is one of America’s top holistic plastic surgeons. Does that sound like an oxymoron?! With plastic surgery being one of the most extreme measures we can take towards achieving beauty: I love that a surgeon combines cutting-edge science with more natural, less invasive practices ~ as I’m a huge proponent of all things natural health. In a recent podcast episode with Dr. Will Cole, a renowned functional medicine practitioner, Dr. Youn discusses his #1 favorite non-invasive skin treatment.
And luckily, it’s affordable for the average person, & involves zero surgery!
Though Dr. Youn looks like he’s in his 30’s, his real age is actually 52.
Dr. Tony Youn’s Favorite Non-Surgical Device:
So….what is this magical treatment that Dr. Youn recommeds for anti-aging?
Answer: Red Light Therapy.
In their podcast interview (which can be found here), Will Cole asks Dr. Youn about the most cutting-edge, non-surgical treatment for the skin, that can be done at home….without spending thousands of dollars.
Here is Dr. Youn’s exact response:
“The first thing I would start with is red light therapy.
How this works, essentially, is that the energy from the red light is transferred to your mitochondria. The mitochondria are the powerhouses of your cells.
The idea is that those mitochondria will be supercharged to create more ATP, & your cells are [now] functioning like younger cells.
– Dr. Tony Youn, from Will Cole’s podcast, “The Art of Being Well.”
The good news is: you can buy a high-quality LED face mask on Amazon, that not only has red light ~ but 6 other light settings, all with different benefits. I own this face mask, & have personally loved using the green setting to help improve lymphatic drainage; it really makes a difference with how my sinuses feel!
Below is a brief description of the benefits that come with each different light therapy color. The “Red” setting is able to penetrate most deeply into the skin, at 630 nanometers, which is one of the reasons why doctors like Youn use it for facial rejuvenation: because it’s actually able to affect your mitochondria & deeper layer of skin cells.
But Are There Studies on Red Light Therapy?
Let’s go right back to Dr. Youn to answer this question.
“The fact is, there are studies that show red light therapy can improve your skin. There was a study that looked at 1,100 people; they had red light therapy for 90 days. And 90% of them had an improvement in the smoothness of their skin, & 80% in the plumpness of their skin.
There have even been split-face studies, where they treat half the face with red light therapy ~ & the other half without: & they found a reduction in wrinkles, improvement in elasticity, & the firmness of the skin.”

Before & After Photos of Red Light Therapy Use
Here are some of the main benefits of using red light therapy for the face:
- A brighter complexion;
- It helps with reducing facial puffiness (Ashley Iaconetti discusses this at length on her Instagram), & can also help with sinuses (by encouraging lymphatic drainage ~ I’ve written an entire article about this, which can be found here);
- Reduction in acne & acne scarring;
- Reduction and/or softening of wrinkles & laugh lines;
- Reduction of nasolabial folds (the deep lines that can form around the nose & mouth);
- Collagen stimulation;
- Improvement in overall skin circulation, firmness, & tone;

Note: I’ve spoken to my dermatologist about LED face masks, & she’s a fan. But the one thing she mentioned was that if you have filler (such as Juvaderm or Restylane), LED light will actually dissolve the filler.
As for Botox, she said that LED light does not affect it.
In case you’re wondering…Jessica Alba, Kourtney Kardashian, Kate Hudson, Chrissy Teigen, & Ashley Iaconetti (from “The Bachelor” franchise) are just a few of the many celebrities who use LED face masks as part of their beauty regimen.
