6 Natural Remedies to Help Unwind on the Road
There’s nothing quite like the excitement of exploring a new destination. Until you’re lying awake at 3 AM in a strange hotel bed, mind racing while your body screams for sleep! Between jet lag, travel stress, and the general chaos that comes with being on the move: relaxing on the road can feel impossible. But here’s what I’ve learned after years of travel: you don’t need heavy-duty sleep aids to find calm away from home. I’ve discovered 6 natural remedies to help unwind on the road, things that help me relax and recharge between adventures.
They’re portable, effective, and won’t leave you groggy the next morning.

I’ve always preferred using natural remedies where I can…
The Art of Unwinding While Exploring…
Here’s what I realized after my first (exhausting) whirlwind trip to Europe: travel isn’t just about cramming in every experience. Real travel, the kind that actually rejuvenates you, requires balance. Rest isn’t wasted time—it’s what allows you to actually enjoy and remember your adventures. Natural remedies help create balance by giving your nervous system permission to relax, even when everything around you is new and stimulating. You’ll have better stories and more energy when you’re not running yourself into the ground!

Take time to relax on the road…
6 Natural Remedies to Help You Unwind on the Road
1. Cannabis-Infused Drinks
Let’s start with the newcomer that’s been gaining serious traction among travelers (in places where it’s legal, of course). Cannabis-infused beverages are a go-to for many when they need to decompress after a long travel day. Crescent Canna cannabis-infused drinks are convenient for travel, as they offer consistent, predictable dosing—no guesswork involved. Unlike smoking, which often isn’t welcome in hotels, these drinks are discreet. They help with everything from travel anxiety to jet lag adjustment, or simply unwinding after pushing yourself too hard exploring.
The key is understanding your destination’s laws before packing. Where legal, they’re fantastic. Start with a low dose if you’re new to this, especially when dealing with time zone changes that may affect how your body processes things.

Pouring a CBD drink over ice creates a great mocktail!
2. Jasmine Essential Oil
While many people love the scent of lavender for relaxing, my go-to essential oil is actually jasmine. I use it in many ways: by putting a few drops on my pillow to help sleep in strange beds, dabbing on my wrists during stressful moments, or even in a small, portable diffuser. The scent triggers an almost Pavlovian relaxation response for me! A small bottle of essential oil (under 3.4 oz) passes through TSA security without issues, making it perfect for carry-on packing.
3. Magnesium Supplements
Here’s something most travelers don’t realize: the stress of travel absolutely depletes your magnesium levels. Add in dehydration from flights and different climates, and your body is basically begging for this crucial mineral. Magnesium is one of our body’s most needed minerals: it promotes muscle relaxation, keeps the immune system healthy, and helps the body create energy and protein.
I find that magnesium capsules are easier to pack than powder forms. Taking it about an hour before bed helps with sleep quality and muscle relaxation (hello…tension from carrying luggage). Bonus: it also helps with that unfortunate travel constipation that nobody talks about, but everyone experiences. Magnesium oxide or magnesium citrate are the two forms that help most with bowel regulation.
You’re welcome!
4. Green Tea
Sometimes the simplest solutions are best. On my recent girl’s trip to Charleston, I brought my favorite Green Tea, by Yogi. The green tea provides calm energy, while the triphala (a powerful Indian fruit) promotes regularity. It’s a 2-for-1! Tea is a great comfort ritual when I’m on the road. The ritual of sipping tea creates a calming routine that signals to your body that it’s time to wind down. Plus, tea bags weigh next to nothing, and take up minimal space in luggage.

The simple act of pouring a hot cup of tea is soothing to the nervous system.

5. CBD Oil or Gummies
When you need to take the edge off without any psychoactive effects, CBD can be brilliant. Many use it for flight anxiety, general travel stress, and overstimulating days when you’re perhaps trying to learn a new language.
Unlike THC products, CBD won’t make you feel high or impaired, so it’s suitable for daytime use. Many of my friends keep gummies in their purse for stressful moments—like delayed flights, etc. Just remember to check your destination’s laws before packing, as CBD legality varies widely.
6. Adaptogenic Herbs (Ashwagandha/Rhodiola)
I’ve saved the best for last. While adaptogenic herbs may not work for everyone, they can be an absolute life-saver for others ~ like me! Adaptogens are herbs that help your body adapt to stress. I use ashwagandha and rhodiola together in the potent Hormone Harmony supplement, by Happy Mammoth. These pills have been a GAME-CHANGER for me during perimenopause, and I have significantly more energy when I take them.
Ashwagandha can help lower cortisol and ease you into rest mode. Rhodiola supports energy without jitters, which is crucial when dealing with jet lag, etc. Unlike quick-fixes, these work best when taken daily throughout your trip. They help your whole system stay more balanced, making recovery faster and stress more manageable.
Capsules are the most travel-friendly form—just toss a bottle in your toiletry bag.
Quick Packing Guide: What Goes Where
In Carry-on:
- Esential oil (small bottle, TSA-approved)
- CBD/cannabis products (where legal at destination)
- Green tea bags
- Magnesium supplements
In Checked Luggage:
- Larger bottles or backup supplies
- Full-size containers of anything you’ll need
Leave At Home:
- Anything illegal at home or your destination
- Glass bottles (transfer to plastic travel containers)
Pro Tip: Always research your destination’s laws before packing anything cannabis-related, including CBD. What’s legal at home might land you in trouble elsewhere.
Practical Travel Tips
Before you experiment with these remedies halfway around the world, try them at home first. It’s crucial to know how your body reacts before you’re dealing with unfamiliar surroundings. And don’t mix multiple sleep aids on the same night—start with one and see how it works before trying anything else.
Hydration is also crucial. These natural remedies work better when you’re properly hydrated. Create an evening wind-down routine using one or two remedies—your body will start associating them with relaxation time. Research shows that natural sleep aids can help with jet lag when used properly. When traveling internationally, keep supplements in their original packaging with labels visible. It makes customs easier to navigate, and ensures you know what you’re taking.
Finally, use the “Do Not Disturb” sign on your hotel door. Protect your rest time!
Final Thoughts
Build your own wind-down kit based on what works for your body. Maybe you’re a green tea-and-lavender person, or perhaps magnesium and CBD are your magic combination. The point is finding what helps you genuinely relax, so that you can wake up ready to explore.
Travel is about the adventures you create and the rest you take between them.
